The sprawling Houston plant of the Lyondell-Citgo
Refining Company is one of over 100 refining and petrochemical
plants located on the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay in
southeast Texas. The plant, which is one of largest in the United
States, has a refining capacity of 265,000 barrels of crude oil per
day. The plant employs over 1,300 people and covers 710 acres (just
over 1 square mile) with tanks, piping, valves, reactors, and other
massive petroleum refining equipment. Like most of the other plants
along the Ship Channel and Bay area, Lyondell uses two-way radio to
manage and coordinate its plant operations.
Lyondell uses a 12 channel Motorola
Smartnet® 2 Trunked Radio System to provide essential
communications. The Lyondell system uses 1,250 intrinsically-safe
handheld radios and 250 vehicular mounted and based mobiles. The
trunked system is organized into 43 departmental talk groups.
Lyondell policy requires that traffic on the radio system be
recorded. To provide efficient, cost effective recording with quick
and easy search and recovery of all two-way radio transmissions,
Lyondell radio system manager, Steve King, chose the SwiftSTOR®
II Communications Recovery System to solve the problem.
The SwiftSTOR®
II installation is shown at the left. At the top are
two redundant 13.8 VDC power supplies. Below the power supplies are 8
Motorola GTX radios and on the next shelf are 4 Motorola GTX radios,
a Motorola RF Modem, and a Spectacom GPS clock. The GTX radios are
programmed as fixed frequency receivers, one for each RF channel. The
CRT and Keyboard are located below the radios and the SwiftSTOR®
II is located on the lower shelf. Steve decided to
archive his recordings using the new 4.7 GB DVD-RAM drives and to get
the trunked radio signals off-the-air. By getting the signals off the
air, the SwiftSTOR® II
does "double duty". In addition to capturing the trunked
radio system and several telephone lines, it also provides a very
convenient way to live monitor and is a valuable tool for
troubleshooting the trunked radio system.
